Although founded in 1846 by a group of Methodist clergymen as the Illinois Conference Female Academy, the first class was not held until 1848. Since its beginnings, the college was affiliated with the United Methodist Church. It was one of the oldest institutions of higher education originally for women in the United States .
MacMurray College was located in Jacksonville, Illinois from 1846 to 2020, when it closed after 174 years. After its closure, the MacMurray Foundation and Alumni Association was formed to carry on and continue sharing the College’s legacy and history.

MacMurray College, founded in 1846, was an independent, four-year college with a strong liberal arts tradition that was closed by its Board of Trustees after the 2020 spring semester. Its 60-acre campus was located in the city of Jacksonville, about 30 miles west of Springfield.
