Jacques Marquette, S.J. (June 1, 1637 – May 18, 1675), sometimes known as Père Marquette or James Marquette, was a French Jesuit missionary who founded Michigan's first European settlement, Sault Sainte Marie, and later founded Saint Ignace.

May 23, 2018 · Jacques Marquette (1637-1675) was a French Jesuit, missionary, and explorer who followed the Illinois and Mississippi rivers on a journey of discovery. Jacques Marquette was the son of a seigneur of Laon. In 1654 he entered the Jesuit novitiate at Nancy, went on to teaching, and began theological studies in 1665.
In the fall of 1669, Jacques Marquette reached the western end of Lake Superior where he founded “the mission of Pointe du Saint-Esprit”, an establishment adopted by the Ottawa and Huron. They soon encountered some “new peoples”, including the Illinois, who were familiar with part of the “Missispi”.
