Chittenden Locks, or Ballard Locks, is a complex of locks at the west end of Salmon Bay in Seattle, Washington's Lake Washington Ship Canal, between the neighborhoods of Ballard to the north and Magnolia to the south. Sep 15, 2019 · The visitor center provides the opportunity to learn more about the history and operation of the Ballard Locks. Located in a charming historic structure, the Hiram M. Chittenden Locks Visitor Center is open daily from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., May 1 to Sept. 30. It's open Thursday through Monday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. from Oct. 1 to April 30.
The complex of locks sits in the middle of Salmon Bay and are part of Seattle's Lake Washington Ship Canal. They are known locally as the Ballard Locks after the neighborhood to their north. (Magnolia lies to the south.) The locks and associated facilities serve three purposes:
