Sep 13, 2013 · The “Holy War” rivalry began in the 1890s. BYU was known as Brigham Young Acadamy (BYA) at the time and split a six-game series against Utah, with both teams winning three games each. The first meeting between the two schools was an unusual April contest that Utah won 12–4.
BYU's annual meeting with Utah ensures a sold-out stadium wherever the game is played. Utah owes seven of its 10 largest crowds before the expansion of Rice Eccles Stadium to the Holy War while five of BYU's 20 largest crowds came by way of the rivalry game. Not only is the game a favorite among fans but is also a favorite in the community.
