Multimodal Pain Management
Postoperative pain can slow down the recovery process and the important use of a new joint. We are one of the few hospitals in the Bay Area to offer multimodal pain management for orthopedic surgeries. This technique combines a cyclooxygenase (COX)-1 inhibitor, a COX-2 inhibitor, and an opioid to control pain on three different levels in the brain. We start pain relief before the patient even goes into the OR, to prepare the body for pain.
Spinal Anesthetic for Hip Replacements
The amount of general anesthesia required for hip replacement surgery can be reduced by using a spinal anesthetic.
Continuous Nerve Block for Knee Replacement
We administer a continuous nerve block during and up to two days after a knee replacement. This reduces the amount of general anesthesia needed to perform the surgery and makes the initial stages of recovery less painful.
