Lake Okeechobee is surrounded by a large earthen dam that was built as a means to prevent flooding after a hurricane in the 1920's killed some 2500 people. The Lake is huge (you cannot see across it) and is accessible best through Pahokee. In fact, if you are visiting to just view the Lake, go there. Pahokee is small somewhat poor rural community.
