The first Roanoke Marshes began operating in 1831, the second in 1858, and the third in 1877. On the downtown Manteo waterfront, the landmark you see in front of you is a replica of the third rendition of Roanoke Marshes. The first of the three lighthouses operated from 1831 to 1839.
The original Roanoke Marshes Lighthouse stood at the southern entrance to Croatan Sound, near Wanchese. The new Roanoke Marshes Light houses historical and educational activities under the auspices of the North Carolina Maritime Museum. Hours vary seasonally. Free Admission.
