Originally consisting of 40 acres, it was expanded after the Civil War to 80 acres. In the 1870s the original corporation was dissolved and Elmwood became one of the oldest nonprofits in Tennessee.

The cemetery was originally 40 acres, but was expanded to 80 acres after the Civil War. The name "Elmwood" was chosen in a drawing. The first burial occurred on July 15, 1853 (Mrs. R. B. Berry), and since then, more than 75,000 people have been buried at Elmwood Cemetery. There's currently space for about 15,000 more.
