The 887-acre Herrick Lake is one of the Forest Preserve District’s most popular preserves. Herrick Lake is home to an impressive variety of wildlife. Ecologists have recorded more than 254 types of year-round and migrating wildlife among the preserve’s 470 different types of plants.
Awesome Lakes and Trails. Nov 2020. Visited Herrick Lake Forest Preserve in Wheaton a few times for hiking and bike riding in November. This forest preserve has a wide range of wonderful recreational opportunities. Options include birding, hiking, biking, kayaking, and picnics.

This trail connects two very fun places - Danada Equestrian Center and Herrick Lake. The trail is relatively flat and very scenic - it has a nice lake, small forests, prairies, and an awesome equestrian center (lessons only- no trail rides). Herrick Lake is the only natural lake in the county.
