  4. The Waldwick Signal Tower is easy to miss as it is in a very isolated location by the railroad tracks. It was one of the original towers to guide the rails from the early turn of the century until the 1980's. The Friends group restored it back to its glory and now they are trying to bring the equipment back to the site to show how it functioned.

  5. May 22, 2009 · The tower remained open through the 1960 Erie Lackawanna merger and the 1976 formation of Conrail, ultimately coming under New Jersey Transit ownership. NJ Transit closed the tower in 1986 after automating the interlocking. The building was later sold and NJ Transit stopped using Waldwick as a nighttime layover yard for commuter trains.

The Waldwick Signal Tower is the last one left in a series of signal towers that had been built along this stretch of the railroad in New Jersey and New York at the turn of the last century. The gentleman who volunteers here grandfather had been one of the conductors on the train and has plenty of stories to tell.

  7. The Waldwick Railroad Yard was a major facility from 1890 until around 1960. At its peak, approximately 50% of the households in Waldwick had at least one family member working for the railroad. Tied into the historical importance of the station, is the nearly renovated signal tower which is located approximately 1,000 feet north of the station.
