The museum is on the site of the old Essanay film studio; the movie home of the first cowboy film star, Bronco Billy Anderson, and Charlie Chaplin.

The museum is housed in the Edison Theater, a century-old Nickelodeon movie theater. This location is just half a block away from the former site of the Niles Essanay Studios, where famous silent film stars like Broncho Billy and Charlie Chaplin made films in the 1910s.
