It was a key part of the historic South Carolina State Road that connected Charleston to Asheville, passing through Columbia and Greenville. This road was sort of the I-26 of its time. The bridge crosses the Little Gap Creek.
The Poinsett Bridge lies on the northern portion of the "Old South Carolina State Trail" wagon trail from northern Greenville County, SC to Charleston, SC. The bridge was built by Joel Roberts Poinsett to span a difficult ford of Little Gap Creek in 1820. The trail itself dates back to 1747.
