  4. Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit is your typical, corny spy movie, relying heavily on coincidences and good fortune. Full Review | Original Score: 2/5 | Jul 16, 2020

  5. "Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit" is another absurd movie with a shallow story and the usual exaggeration. In this movie, the efficiency of the American secret service is amazing while Russians are depicted as stupid. The plot and the action scenes look like any Tom Cruise's usual flick, where he is the best agent of the world. My vote is four.

The franchise reboot Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit, the first original movie not based on the late Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan novels, is an origin story about how the young analyst (ably played by Chris Pine in his first time at bat as Jack) came to work for the CIA. A college student on 9/11, Ryan joins the Marines, survives combat in Afghanistan, and is later recruited to work for the Agency as an analyst by his mentor William Harper (Kevin Costner).

A little over a decade later, Jack and the CIA are out to thwart a Russian plot – hatched by one Viktor Cherevin (Kenneth Branagh, who also directed) -- to ruin the world economy. (Does it really take a supervillain to do that when Mother Nature or greedy CEOs seem perfectly capable of doing it without the use of secret plots or big bombs?) Long story short, Jack’s elevated from mere analyst to operational CIA field agent and is thrust into the thick of the action, which takes him from Moscow to Manhattan.

The exact same story of Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit could have been pieced together as a YouTube supercut from other contemporary action movies. The movie is a patchwork of derivative set-pieces and moments culled from other and better entries in the action and techno-thriller genres. There are bits from the Bourne trilogy, Die Hard With a Vengeance, James Bond, Mission: Impossible, and even a pinch of Salt.

It’s not all bad, mind you. The first act is actually interesting and had me thinking maybe Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit would be a refreshing surprise given how humdrum its trailers have been. The filmmakers draw on backstory from Clancy’s novels, but update it to the 21st century. This is Jack Ryan for a post-9/11 world, a young hero defined by the War on Terror in the way that the Cold War shaped Clancy’s literary hero. This was one of the movie’s biggest challenges: making Jack Ryan relevant again much the same way the Bond franchise had to with 007. Unfortunately, Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit is only partially effective at doing that.

Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit updates its Cold War hero for the modern world, but doesn’t give him a story original enough to warrant further adventures or to distinguish him anymore from the rest of the action pack.

  6. Jan 17, 2014 · Review. Featured review. 8/10. 'You Americans like to think of yourselves as direct. Perhaps you are just rude.'. Tom Clancy's durable creation Jack Ryan rides again in this well written (Adam Cozad and David Koepp) and well directed (Kenneth Branagh) new version – JACK RYAN: SHADOW RECRUIT.
