The film received mixed reviews, including criticism for being an imitation of Oliver Stone's 1986 war drama Platoon. After the film's DVD release in December 2017, Cinapse film review writer Ed Travis acknowledged the film's ambitions in terms of its direction and production.
PLATOON LEADER is director Aaron Norris' only film that his brother Chuck did not star in. It's a solid Vietnam War actioner, shot in South Africa and produced by Cannon Films. Michael Dudikoff delivers one of his better performances, and the action is well-executed, especially the countless big ass explosions.
West Point graduate lieutenant Jeff Knight meets cynicism when taking command of sergeant Michael McNamara's tour veterans platoon in a Vietnamese trench camp. Unlike his predecessor, who hid till the end of his tour, Jeff takes charge, experiences the manual doesn't allow coping with all realities and gets wounded.
