Greasy Lake Full Story Summary. An unnamed narrator recalls the events of a night when he was nineteen. He and two friends, home for summer break after the first year of college, spend their time driving their town’s strip, drinking, and dancing.
A group of young rebels cruise to Greasy Lake, a secluded spot where they drink, smoke, and listen to rock and roll. But their night turns violent when they encounter a rival gang and a mysterious stranger.
Once a clear, glistening lake, it has now become a murky and “festering” place, but it is still all the boys know of nature. It is the third night of summer vacation, and the boys are dreadfully bored—Greasy Lake offers the possibility of danger, intoxication, and sex.
A collection of short stories by T. Coraghessan Boyle published in 1985, reflecting the fears and anxieties of America in the 1960s. The title story is inspired by Bruce Springsteen's song "Spirit in the Night" and depicts the rebellious behavior of three teenagers at a polluted lake.
