This book, Part II (Vol. 8) of the Winnetou trilogy, was first published in 1893, although May had first invented an early version of Winnetou in 1878.
The story of the German-born frontiersman Old Shatterhand and his Apache companion Winnetou in the western plains and mountains has been reprinted innumerable times, made into films and plays, and has inspired musical compositions.
