The Deerslayer, or The First War-Path (1841) was James Fenimore Cooper's last novel in his Leatherstocking Tales. Its 1740–1745 time period makes it the first installment chronologically and in the lifetime of the hero of the Leatherstocking tales, Natty Bumppo.
Known as “Deerslayer” among the Delaware people with whom he lives, young Bumppo and the giant Hurry Harry help the trapper Thomas Hutter to resist an attack by the Iroquois, who are allied with the French.
Deerslayer is an avid hunter, as his names suggests, but not a soldier. Chingachgook will one day become a warrior, but for now, his goal is to free his betrothed who has been captured by the Iroqois. Deerslayer, as a loyal friend, embarks on this journey.

In stature he stood about six feet in his moccasins, but his frame was comparatively light and slender, showing muscles, however, that promised unusual agility, if not unusual strength.
