The story centers on Kaiji Itō, a consummate gambler, and his misadventures around gambling. The Kaiji manga consists of six series; the current series, Tobaku Datenroku Kaiji: 24 Oku Dasshutsu-hen, started in 2017.
Kaiji Itō is a loser and gambler living in poverty. One day he is approached by a loan shark named Yūji Endō, who tells Kaiji that he owes ¥3,850,000 (around $37,500) for guaranteeing a loan with a former co-worker who has disappeared.
