Phèdre (French:; originally Phèdre et Hippolyte) is a French dramatic tragedy in five acts written in alexandrine verse by Jean Racine, first performed in 1677 at the theatre of the Hôtel de Bourgogne in Paris.

With the people of Athens choosing her son as King, Phèdre hopes to win over Hippolytus, if not by love, then by the allure of the scepter. Theseus, however is still alive (having escaped from the underworld where he was held captive) and is coldly welcomed home by both his wife and stepson.
