  2. The cheese is thick and it smothers everything in “The Boy Next Door,” but it’s never quite gooey or spicy enough. You want an erotic thriller in which a hunky 19-year-old seduces a mom twice his age – and then obsessively stalks and threatens her – to be as over-the-top as possible.

“If you had my love and I gave you all my trust, would you turn into a crazy stalker?”

“Waiting for tonight (so I can watch you sleep).”

Claire Peterson’s (Jennifer Lopez) block isn’t so bad. It’s a calm and peaceful suburban setting and the biggest issue is some family drama. Her husband, Garrett Peterson (John Corbett), cheated on her some time ago, and now she’s been struggling to raise their son, Kevin (Ian Nelson), on her own. Garrett feels bad about what he did and now he wants to return to the way things were. It’s all pretty bland stuff, but then Noah Sandborn (Ryan Guzman), a jacked and oh-so-friendly teenager, moves in with his relative right next door to Claire.

Noah’s more than just eye candy, though. It turns out he’s also passionate about classic literature – the subject Claire happens to teach at the local high school – and they become closer and closer until, well, you know what happens. Was it a mistake? Is it true love? It doesn’t matter because Claire knows the relationship could tear apart her family (Noah’s friends with Kevin, so that’s just a little awkward) and ruin her career, so she tells Noah their night of lovin’ can never happen again. Ouch. However, it turns out Noah not only has anger issues, but he’s also a psychotic stalker. And an expert in hand-to-hand combat. And a master manipulator. And a twisted genius. Aaaaaaaand a marksman. Jeez, give him a ton of money and he’s like the evil version of Batman, isn’t he?

The Boy Next Door is the movie you’ve already seen countless times before. You don’t need to be a movie buff to know what’ll happen next and unfortunately, the way it all plays out doesn’t make up for its lack of creativity. Sure, there’s a decent thrill or two and a little bit of silly fun in there, but it never does anything to really impress.
