His work featured an array of subjects, including celebrity portraits, male and female nudes, self-portraits, and still-life images.
In a 2009 exhibition Mapplethorpe: Perfection in Form, at the Galleria dell’Accademia in Florence, Italy, his photographs were presented alongside great Renaissance masterpieces such as Michelangelo’s David 1504.
