John Gunther (Arthur Hill) discovers that his 17-year-old son, Johnny (Robby Benson), has a brain tumor. The tragic news does not deter Johnny, who is in and out of hospitals for treatment, from continuing on with his studies and working toward achieving his dreams. John and his estranged wife, Frances Gunther (Jane Alexander), have a harder time dealing with the news, but Johnny's bravery and perseverance inspire those around him and help the divided family to come together.
