The Southern Comfort that’s available today is likely better than what you remember throwing back in college—the whiskey-based liqueur was made with a neutral grain spirit for decades, but that changed when New Orleans’ Sazerac Company bought the brand ...

    • Is Southern Comfort a whiskey? Though it invariably appears on liquor store shelves next to Jim Beam and Jack Daniels, Southern Comfort isn’t actually a whiskey.
    • For many years SoCo didn’t even contain whiskey. The brand changed hands multiple times after Heron died in 1920 (three months after the start of Prohibition, no less).
    • Its tagline is slightly misleading. When creator Heron patented his drink in 1889, he labeled bottles with the tagline “None Genuine But Mine.” The brand continued to use the line for more than 70 years, even after changing one of its “genuine” core ingredients, whiskey.

  7. Nov 13, 2010 · Southern Comfort — like Jagermeister, Rumple Minze, and a few other notorious liqueuers — is a bit of an acquired taste, but SoCo 100 at least has more taste and takes less acquiring to be enjoyable. Compare to $14 for a regular bottle of SoCo and it’s definitely worth the upgrade. 100 proof.
