  5. 8/10. Brilliant, crisp film-making. mik-19 29 December 2004. I have a soft spot for this movie, it makes me cry and it challenges me. It hovers eagle-like over other pieces of quaint, nostalgic Americana in its brilliant mise-en-scène by overlooked film-maker Raoul Walsh, its crisp and very acute script, and its wonderful acting.

A romantic comedy-drama of some charm but little substance, Raoul Walsh’s The Strawberry Blonde offers a first-rate cast and some lilting turn-of-the-20thcentury tunes in its flashback story of the road not taken. Warner Bros.’ stable of top stars and able character actors are abetted with Columbia’s Rita Hayworth (as the title character) to make a...

The film’s 1.37:1 theatrical aspect ratio is faithfully rendered in this 1080p transfer using the AVC codec. Sharpness is so acute that the appliances used to give James Cagney the black eye “mouse” each time he gets socked can be keenly studied in close-ups. The grayscale is magnificent with crisp, clean white levels and deep, rich blacks throughout. Overall, the images are pristine. The movie has been divided into 28 chapters.

The DTS-HD Master Audio 2.0 mono sound mix offers very good fidelity for a movie of this vintage. Though not really a musical in the strictest sense (despite its Oscar nomination for its musical scoring), the period songs sung almost constantly in the film’s first third sound very resonant and are as clear as the well-recorded dialogue and effectiv...

Raoul Walsh’s The Strawberry Blondeis a charming trifle, a lilting comedy-drama with romantic ups and downs in equal measure. The new Warner Archive Blu-ray offers the film its best-ever home video presentation.

  6. Critic Bosley Crowther praised Strawberry Blonde in a New York Times February 1941 review, calling it "lusty, affectionate, and altogether winning." [15] Part of its "amiable, infectious quality", he wrote, came from its cast: "James Cagney, true to form, is excellent as the pugnacious and proud little guy who 'don't take nothing from nobody ...
