The Girl Downstairs is a 1938 American romantic-comedy film directed by Norman Taurog and starring Franciska Gaal, Franchot Tone and Walter Connolly. It is a remake of the 1936 Austrian film Catherine the Last, directed by Henry Koster, which had been a major hit for Gaal.
Synopsis. In Berne, Switzerland, when playboy Paul Wagner sneaks into Rosalind Brown's box at the opera, her father lets him know once again that he is not a proper suitor. Later, while Rosalind cajoles Brown into giving Paul another chance, Paul gets so drunk that he is thrown out of a nightclub.

The Girl Downstairs (1938) A case of mistaken identity (impersonation) drives this fluffy piece of frippery. The Girl Downstairs did not make much of an impression on me until Franciska Gaal, as Katerina, came on screen. I found her to be charming.
Plot. The Girl Downstairs. Summaries. A wealthy playboy surreptitiously romances a scullery maid to gain access to her mistress with whom he is in love, but doesn't count on the maid falling in love with him. Paul Wagner and Rosalind Brown are in love, but her father doesn't feel Paul's lifestyle will make him a suitable husband for his daughter.
