- It's a 50s melodrama, so naturally, there's a staginess, an artifice. Things are overblown, heavy-handed, and presented in the broadest strokes, but Tea and Sympathy is also well-observed, poignant, sincere, and well-directed. Vincente Minnelli does a great job bringing the text to life, with the vibrant colours of the era's best melodramas.
