Olivia, a beautiful nightclub singer (Joan Crawford), attracts every man she meets, including the brother of her new fiance. Her fiance, Henry, (Melvyn Douglas) and his brother, David, (Robert Young) are from an old, wealthy, landed-gentry-type family.

Joan Crawford disrupts a family in "The Shining Hour," a 1938 film also starring Melvyn Douglas, Margaret Sullavan, Robert Young, and Fay Bainter. Crawford is Olivia Reilly, a New York City dancer who works in a nightclub with a partner doing an act sort of modeled on Astaire and Rogers though it's clearly down several levels.
Olivia is a show girl in a New York nightclub and when Henry brings her home to his family -- his brother David (Robert Young) and spinster sister Hannah (Fay Bainter) -- on his family's estate, Olivia is given the cold shoulder, particularly by David, who is actually attracted to Olivia himself.
