A stateless Russian countess stows away in the cabin of an American diplomat while his ship is docked in Hong Kong. She is determined to get to America but, to avoid a scandal, he wants her off the ship as soon as possible.
On the eve of his departure from Hong Kong, wealthy American diplomat Ogden Mears spends a night ashore in the company of the beautiful Countess Natascha, an impoverished Russian emigrée who, from the age of 13, has survived by working as a dancehall girl.
