At the Empire State Building, Joe Riley bids farewell to New York City as he prepares to head West to his ranch in Arizona. He dreams of his twenty acres of beautiful farmland called "Shady Acres" for which he has saved for six years.

During the Depression, New York City store clerk Joe Riley saves money and buys a piece of land in Arizona. He is determined to become a farmer. Not having enough money for a bus ticket to Arizona, Joe decides to hitchhike there.
