medical : a serious state in which an ill or injured individual has dangerously unstable or abnormal vital signs and typically requires short-term life support measures (such as mechanical respiration or defibrillation) for stabilization and support prior to or during recovery.
Medical state is a term used to describe a hospital patient's health status, or condition. The term is most commonly used in information given to the news media, and is rarely used as a clinical description by physicians. Two aspects of the patient's state may be reported.

A patient is deemed to be in critical condition when their vital signs and organ systems are unstable, and their health is at risk of rapid deterioration. Conditions that fall under this category often involve significant organ dysfunction, life-threatening injuries, or severe infections.

In general, the management of critically ill patients has predominantly focused on treatment of the underlying condition. Common conditions leading to intensive care unit (ICU) admission include respiratory failure, acute myocardial infarction, cerebral infarction/intracranial hemorrhage, and sepsis ( 1 ).
What is critical condition? If a patient is in critical condition, that patient is under serious medical duress, and one or multiple of their vital signs, including but not limited to respiration, blood pressure, and heart rate, are significantly outside of normal values.

Critical care medicine specializes in caring for the most seriously ill patients. These patients are best treated in an intensive care unit (ICU) staffed by experienced personnel. Some hospitals maintain separate units for special populations (eg, cardiac, transplant, trauma, surgical, neurologic, pediatric, or neonatal patients).
