Synopsis. The story takes place during one long night during a sudden blizzard at Lincoln International, a fictional Chicago airport based very loosely on O'Hare International Airport. The action mainly centers on Mel Bakersfeld (Burt Lancaster), the airport general manager.
Although the film takes place at the fictitious Lincoln International Airport (it was modeled on Chicago's O'Hare Airport), most of the action takes place aboard a Boeing 707 carrying 110 passengers, including a mad bomber who precipitates one of many disasters that almost doom the flight.
During a snowstorm at Lincoln International Airport in Chicago, the manager of the airport (Burt Lancaster) works overtime to clear the main runway of a Boeing 707 that’s stuck in the snow while dealing with his failing marriage.
