In the annals of Victorian pulp fiction, the character of Sweeney Todd, otherwise known as the Demon Barber of Fleet Street, occupies a prominent position. From his first appearance in print in some serialized Penny Dreadfuls in the 1840s, he appeared in numerous different stories.
Sweeney Todd is a fictional character who first appeared as the villain of the penny dreadful serial The String of Pearls (1846–1847). The original tale became a feature of 19th-century melodrama and London legend.

Sweeney Todd, a barber by trade, does a brisk business in his shop in turn-of-the-century London's Fleet Street. When a wealthy diamond merchant disappears, Ben Carlyle, an American insurance investigator is sent to London to recover $50,000 worth of diamonds owed by the merchant to his employer.
The fictional tale of the murderous 19th century barber (Ben Kinglsey) who sold his kills to a neighboring butcher (Joanna Lumley) for her renowned meat pies. A young innocent (Selina Boyack) and the dashing inspector (Campbell Scott) who tries to solve the murders are also thrown into the mix.
