   • During the Civil War, the estate was given by Oliver Cromwell to John Bradshaw, Lord President of the parliamentary commission that tried the king. The Cottingtons returned to Fonthill when Charles II was crowned in 1660. The house, and the estate were sold to Alderman William Beckford, Lord Mayor of London, in 1745.
