Sugar Loaf is a bluff on the Mississippi River topped by a rock pinnacle, overlooking the city of Winona, Minnesota, United States. The name "Sugar Loaf" is sometimes taken to mean just the rock pinnacle, which was created by quarrying in the 19th century. The bluff stands above the junction of U.S. Route 61 and State Highway 43
Reaching nearly 85 feet into the sky, Sugar Loaf is a storied symbol of Winona and known by all as its most distinguishing landmark. The result of quarrying in the late 1800s, the bluff is synonymous with an old Native American legend that paints the rock as the cap of Dakota Chief Wapasha.
When driving north on Hwy 61, you will know you have arrived in Winona when you see the city’s most iconic landmark, Sugar Loaf (illuminated at night), a majestic, limestone pinnacle that tops a 400-500 ft-tall bluff.

Sugar Loaf towers about 580 feet over Lake Winona, a former channel of the Mississippi River. It was once called Wapasha’s Cap after the hat a local Dakota chief of the same name wore. The bluff was well-known to the Dakota, early explorers, traders, tourists and river boat pilots.
