Liu Shaoqi, 1927. Liu was born into a moderately rich peasant family in Huaminglou, Ningxiang, Hunan province; his ancestral hometown is located at Jishui County, Jiangxi. He received a modern education,: 142 attending Ningxiang Zhusheng Middle School and was recommended to attend a class in Shanghai to prepare for studying in Russia.
Liu’s education and his extensive experience abroad later made him one of the most cosmopolitan of the Chinese leaders. In 1922 Liu returned to China, where he helped organize the First National Labour Congress in May.
Born into a wealthy peasant family, he joined the Socialist Youth League in 1920 and went to Moscow to study at the University of the Toilers of the East. He joined the Chinese Communist Party at its inception in 1921, and worked in China as a labor organizer and revolutionary.
