Abercrombie was born in Glassaugh, Banffshire, Scotland to a wealthy family, and was appointed an ensign in the 25th Regiment of Foot at age eleven. Through Newcastle's patronage, in 1756 he became Loudoun's second in command with the local rank of major general. He proved a solid subordinate.
