James Bernard Machen (/ ˈ m æ tʃ ə n /; born March 26, 1944) is an American university professor and administrator. Machen is a native of Mississippi, and earned several academic degrees before becoming a university administrator and president.
Bernie Machen was UF's 11th president from 2004 to 2014, leading the university to grow and enhance its research, education, and innovation. He launched the UF Preeminence Plan, expanded the health sciences program, and created the Bob Graham Center and other institutes.
