A member of the Republican Party, he also was the 45th governor of Tennessee from 1979 to 1987 and the 5th United States Secretary of Education from 1991 to 1993, where he helped with the implementation of Education 2000.

    Sets a record at Vanderbilt University as a member of the 440-yard relay team. He is now a member of the Vanderbilt Athletic Hall of Fame.

    Is re-elected to the U.S. Senate after defeating Gordon Ball. His accomplishments in his time as senator include sponsoring the Every Student Succeeds Act and the 21st Century Cures Act. He also been a principal sponsor of bills reforming student loans, modernizing how songwriters are paid and funding the National Park Service maintenance backlog.

    Authors the Opioid Crisis Response Act, which Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell calls "landmark legislation."
