Prince Aleksander Danilovich Menshikov was a Russian statesman, whose official titles included Generalissimo, Prince of the Russian Empire and Duke of Izhora , Prince of the Holy Roman Empire, Duke of Cosel. A highly appreciated associate and friend of Tsar Peter the Great, he was the de facto ruler of Russia from 1725 to 1727.
Aleksandr Danilovich Menshikov, Prince (əlyĬksän´dər dənyē´ləvĬch mĕn´shĬkəf), 1672?–1729, Russian field marshal and statesman. Of lowly origin, he became an intimate companion of Peter I (Peter the Great), and after the death of François Lefort (1699) he was the czar's chief adviser.
Losses of the Russian troops turned out to be minor. As a reward for this victory tsar presented Alexander Danilovich a baton, decorated with precious stones, and promoted him to the colonel of the Life Guards of Preobrazhensky regiment. Menshikov played a significant role in the Battle of Poltava (June 27 (July 8) 1709).
