Kathleen Hochul ( / ˈhoʊkəl / HOH-kəl; née Courtney; born August 27, 1958) is an American politician and lawyer. Since August 24, 2021, she has served as the 57th governor of New York. [1] A member of the Democratic Party, she is New York's first female governor [2] and the first governor from Upstate New York since Nathan L. Miller in 1920.
Aug 4, 2024 · Hochul was born Kathleen (Kathy) Courtney in Woodlawn, New York, outside of Buffalo. She was the second of six children of Jack Courtney, who did clerical work at the Bethlehem Steel plant—where her grandfather and uncle also worked—while taking night classes toward a college degree, and Pat Courtney, who was a stay-at-home mother.
Kathy believes in creating a statewide system that puts a quality education within reach for all. From expanding access to early childhood education to improving the state’s colleges and universities, she will ensure that New York is a national leader in education.
