Cromwell, Henry (1628–74), soldier and administrator, was born 20 January 1628 at Huntingdon, Cambridgeshire, England, fourth son of Oliver Cromwell (qv) and Elizabeth Cromwell (née Bourchier). He fought only in the closing stages of the English civil wars. In 1647 he was a colonel.
Although Henry Cromwell was named lord lieutenant of Ireland on 6 October 1658, this had little significance as power slipped from his brother's hands in England. On 6 May 1659 the army forced Richard to recall the Rump parliament and on 24 May he formally resigned the protectorate.
