Adlai Ewing Stevenson II ( / ˈædleɪ /; February 5, 1900 – July 14, 1965) was an American politician and diplomat who was the United States Ambassador to the United Nations from 1961 until his death in 1965.
He was governor of Illinois from 1949-53; he was nominated twice for the Presidency, in 1952 and 1956, and he was U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations from 1961-65. But his legacy was varied, and much of it fell within three broad themes: Helping the Midwest in the 1930s to burst from its isolationism.

Adlai II distinguished himself as the 31st Governor of Illinois, two-time Democratic nominee for President of the United States, and served as the U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations during the turbulent 1960s. In his own words he had a “bad case of hereditary politics.”
In 1965, while walking down a London street with a friend, Adlai E. Stevenson II collapsed and died of a heart attack. After a service in the National Cathedral in Washington D.C., his body was returned to Illinois to lie in state in the capitol in Springfield. Over 42,000 people paid their respects to him there.
