Jan Augustus Gies was born on 18 August 1905 in the parental home Rustenburgerstraat 191, Amsterdam as the son of Cornelis Gies and Wilhelmina Gezina Steenge. He was the youngest of five children and was preceded by: Rosina Wilhelmina (Ro), Cornelis, Fenna Gesiena and Johanna Augusta.
His second wife, Elfriede, filled out Pages of Testimony in memory of Anne Frank, her sister and mother. On March 8, 1972, Yad Vashem recognized Jan Augustus Gies and his wife, Hermine (Miep) Gies-Santrouschitz, as Righteous Among the Nations.
