Early life, education, and legal career. Cornyn was born in Houston, the second child of Atholene Gale Cornyn (née Danley) and John Cornyn II, a colonel in the U.S. Air Force. He attended the American School in Japan after his family moved to Tokyo in 1968, and graduated from it in 1969.
In 1973, John graduated from Trinity University in San Antonio with a degree in journalism. After beginning his education as a biology major with hopes of becoming a doctor, his interests and passions shifted and he changed his major to journalism. While in school he worked for the university paper, The Trinitonian.
In 1973, Senator Cornyn earned a Bachelor of Arts in Journalism from Trinity University in San Antonio. He earned his Juris Doctor from St. Mary’s University School of Law in 1977. While serving as a Justice on the Texas Supreme Court, Senator Cornyn earned his Master of Laws degree from the University of Virginia in 1995.
