Apr 8, 2024 · James Sherman (born Oct. 24, 1855, Utica, N.Y., U.S.—died Oct. 30, 1912, Utica) was the 27th vice president of the United States (1909–12) in the Republican administration of President William Howard Taft. Sherman was the son of Richard Updike Sherman, a newspaper editor and Democratic Party politician, and Mary Frances Sherman.

Sherman was chosen partially as a compromise pick to appease conservative Republicans and with hopes he would help Taft carry New York in the election. The Taft-Sherman ticket won in a landslide over the Democratic ticket of William Jennings Bryan and James Kern.

Apr 30, 2024 · Early Life. James S Sherman was born on October 24, 1855, in Utica, New York. His grandfather owned a large farm, while his father published a Democratic newspaper. Upon graduating from Whitestown Seminary in 1874, Sherman attended Hamilton College. When he completed his undergraduate studies, he went on to earn his law degree.
