Edward Gordon Craig was born in Stevenage, Hertfordshire, the son of E W Godwin and the actress Ellen Terry. He was a wood engraver, editor, journalist, but above all genius of the theatre. His stage designs stripped theatre down to its essentials, clearing the stage for the 20th Century.
