Counts of Vendôme. Count of Vendôme and, later, Duke of Vendôme were titles of French nobility. The first-known holder of the comital title was Bouchard Ratepilate. The county passed by marriage to various houses, coming in 1372 to a junior branch of the House of Bourbon. In 1514, Vendôme was made a duchy-peerage .

Charles's first military service was in Italy, under King Louis XII of France. In 1514, he was created Duke of Vendôme when the county of Vendôme was elevated into a duchy. He fought at the Battle of Marignano (1515) and participated in the Flemish campaign.
Biography. Son of François de Bourbon-Vendôme (1470-1495); took part in the Italian wars, fighting in Marignano (1515) for Louis XII (q.v.) and serving François I (q.v.). Succeeded Charles III 'connétable de Bourbon' as Duke of Bourbon in 1527. 3 related objects.
