Louis XV (15 February 1710 – 10 May 1774), known as Louis the Beloved (French: le Bien-Aimé), was King of France from 1 September 1715 until his death in 1774. He succeeded his great-grandfather Louis XIV at the age of five.

King of France and Navarre 1710-1774. Acceding to the throne in 1715, Louis XV came to be known as “le Bien-Aimé” (the Beloved). In 1722 he moved the Court and the seat of government back to the Palace of Versailles, which had been abandoned after the death of Louis XIV.

Born in 1710 in Versailles, Louis XV was the son of the Duke of Burgundy and Marie-Adélaïde of Savoy, as well as the great-grandson of Louis XIV. Heir apparent after the death of his father, he became king at the tender age of five after the death of the Sun King on 1 September 1715.
