Louis II was Grand Duke of Hesse and by Rhine from 6 April 1830 until 16 June 1848. He was the son of Louis I, Grand Duke of Hesse, and Princess Louise of Hesse-Darmstadt.
The title was revived in 1851, when Alexander (1823–88), a younger son of Louis II, grand duke of Hesse, contracted a morganatic marriage with the Polish countess Julia Theresa von Hauke (1825–95), who was then created countess of Battenberg.

Feb 14, 2023 · Ludwig (Louis) II was Grand Duke of Hesse and by Rhine from 1830 to 1848. He was born in 1777 in Darmstadt, in what was then the Holy Roman Empire. He married his cousin Princess Wilhelmine of Baden in 1804 in Karlsruhe, Baden, Germany. The couple separated after the birth of their second surviving child in 1809.
