Terence Tao was born in Adelaide, Australia in 1975. He has been a professor of mathematics at UCLA since 1999, having completed his PhD under Elias Stein at Princeton in 1996. Tao's areas of research include harmonic analysis, PDE, combinatorics, and number theory.

Terence Tao became the first mathematics professor in UCLA history to be awarded the prestigious Fields Medal, often described as the “Nobel Prize in mathematics,” during the opening ceremony of the International Congress of Mathematicians in Madrid on Aug. 22.

Tao is is the very definition of a prodigy: a bachelor’s and a master’s degree at age 16, a Ph.D. at 20 and a full professor at 24 – the youngest in UCLA’s history.
Terence Tao is a Professor at the Department of Mathematics, UCLA. He works in a number of mathematical areas, but primarily in harmonic analysis, PDE, geometric combinatorics, arithmetic combinatorics, analytic number theory, compressed sensing, and algebraic combinatorics.
